Improved reliability and performance Version 6.5.3 Added the ability to import EML files with the.ema extension Improved behavior when attempting to read files with passwordsQuick Note: I’ll admit it, there are many times I intentionally skip gaming news because I don’t like to read articles on something I’m already more than familiar with, but this isn’t one of those times. Yes, we all know that the Wii U is very low on games, but Kotaku is actually doing a bit of a deep dive into the reason why the NPD Software Sales chart is looking so unappetizing for the first few weeks of release. It’s not necessarily any one thing, but rather several trends at work that are making the NPD chart look as if it’s been designed to take in as little Nintendo software as possible. On the one hand, the chart is not only skewed by sales at GameStop as well as the dwindling sales of the Wii U, but it also isn’t capturing the overall slump of retail sales of Nintendo software. As much as Nintendo has refused to give a digital forecast for their sales, you can be sure that their chart has been skewed in favor of digital. You can’t escape that digital threat, because it’s impossible to tell where the sales of retail software are really coming from, when they are from physical media, and where they are coming from digitally. In the end, the sales of Nintendo software at retail are the smallest they have been in quite some time, and they are not reflected in the NPD chart. The problem here is that while the games not owned digitally are less and less of a problem, the games that do not get sold to retailers are hurting Nintendo as much as the retailers. It is a symbiotic relationship, as a reduced level of retail sales means that there are fewer chances to make money from Nintendo products, meaning Nintendo is more likely to have to rely on digital. I am sure that this is exactly the sort of direction that Nintendo is going in, because the idea of being a “retail” company sounds dreadful to them. The solution? Nintendo should do what they do best: take control of their distribution, and start releasing games on a regular schedule, rather than having publishers control the number of releases each year. Then they could have a solid year of retail software, and once digital sales catch up, a solid year of digital
