Macintosh CD Macintosh Hybrid CD ISO 9660 CD Introduction What is a CD-ROM? Definition The CD-ROM is a medium for storing data. Data is usually written in two parts: a Logical Partition (that is a virtual partition made of files) and an Audio Partition (which stores the sound). On a standard CD-ROM, the Logical Partition is called 'cdr1' (for CD-ROM Partition 1). The Logical Partition is sometimes called the Data Partition, and the Audio Partition is sometimes called the Program Partition. The CD-ROM Media has a number of physical specifications, mainly the type of media (usually CD-ROM media and not CD-R media). The type of CD-ROM is a number (most commonly 1). The rest of the specifications are the size of the medium (in 0.5" or 1.25" for a single-layer CD-ROM, in 650mm or 1025mm for a double-layer CD-ROM), the tracks per second (1x or 2x for a single-layer CD-ROM, 3x for a double-layer CD-ROM), the minimum number of tracks per side (320 for a single-layer CD-ROM, 640 for a double-layer CD-ROM) and the maximum number of tracks per side (3072 for a single-layer CD-ROM, 7680 for a double-layer CD-ROM). The logical partitions of the CD-ROM are created by the burning software, and each logical partition contains a portion of the data contained in the logical partition. Standard ISO 9660 CD-ROMs are composed of several Logical Partitions. The number of Logical Partitions is not limited, but the size of each Logical Partition cannot be smaller than 10 MB, and cannot exceed the capacity of the medium (2000 MB for a single-layer CD-ROM, 4000 MB for a double-layer CD-ROM). The logical partition has a name, a type and a size. The type specifies the content of the Logical Partition. The size specifies the amount of data in bytes, divided by a power of two (4K, 8K, 16K, 32K, 64K, etc.) Logical Partition Types The logical partition types are: 'cdr' for the Logical Partition containing the CD-ROM Data. 'audio' for the Logical Partition containing the Audio data (there are two types of Audio data, 16 bit and 24 bit). 'system' for the Logical Partition containing the System files. 'cue' for the Logical Partition containing the tracks of the CD-DA Audio disc. 'dvd' for the Logical Partition containing the data of a DVD video disc. 'image' for the 972550f159
